The Parishes of Great Ness & Little Ness, Shropshire

What is it?
The Project aims to restore important historical features which are situated within the parish of Great Ness and to make them more easily accessible to locals and visitors to the area. Information panels will be erected. There will be a nearby bench so the beauty of the countryside can be appreciated.
The Great Ness village pump, situated on the side of the road just past Great Ness Church, is an interesting feature which has been forgotten or ignored for many years. Hidden and neglected by undergrowth it is soon to be revealed again in all its glory but, unfortunately, it will not be possible to restore its function.
The Great Ness Pound, situated opposite Great Ness Churchyard, was used to enclose stray farm animals. The owner of the lost animals had to pay a fine to the ‘Pounder’ before they could be released again. Most old pounds date back to at least the early 18th century. Ours will be restored as part of the project.
The original ‘A5’ to Anglesey is the old road adjacent to the tower of Great Ness Church. Centuries later Thomas Telford built a replacement – now known as ‘the old A5’ since the building of the Nesscliffe Bypass. The ancient A5 will have a bench situated nearby.
